Shelley Maxwell – Ashtanga, Vinyasa Flow, Mandala and Yin yoga teacher …

I grew up in a very yang ( male, manic) home. My mum had a theatre and dancer background and my dad had a football and carpentry background with two older brothers who loved a lot of varied sport, it was a busy childhood…. My yin and my yang were my horses and I became interested in anatomy and fitness and trained first to become a personal trainer to improve my endurance horse riding. 20 years ago I injured my back falling off a horse, at this time I discovered yoga and pilates, mainly for rehab purposes in the beginning, then the more I learnt about pranayama (the breath work) the more it helped with calming my mind and connecting with my horses… the yoga love affair began. I started practicing Vinyasa flow in the beginning and fell for the dance of flowing and the discipline and continuous journey of discovery with Ashtanga.

I love the balance of yin and yang and intelligent sequencing and mindful alignment. I trained in Vinyasa Flow and Yin with American company Drishti, Mandala with The Yoga People and Anatomy with Tiffany Cruikshank (Yoga Medicine) as well as being a qualified Master Trainer with The Australian Institute of Fitness.

I take inspiration from and have practiced and trained with Angela Kukhahn and Briohny Smyth in Los Angeles as well as Sarah Thompson, Julie Montagu, Jeff Phenix, Natasha Kerry and Jonelle Lewis in London.

I spent the summer of 2019 in Thailand and I completed my advanced 300 hour teacher training with Briohny Smyth, Dice Lida-Klein and the wonderful Claudine and Honza Lafond -Yoga Beyond … deepening my physical practice with acro yoga and vinyasa and exploring more into mediation, and mindfulness as well as learning Thai massage.

My yang classes ( Vinyasa/Mandala) are a creative moving meditation, with an aim to make you feel energised and empowered, expect a workout with a well deserved savasana and maybe a Thai head massage at the end 🙂

My Yin classes are also mediative and mindful, but all about holding poses for longer with the aid of props to get into the fascia, connective tissues, joints, ligaments and tendons and creating balance in the body and mind.

I studied Visual Communications at AIU and like to pretend to be a bit of a David Bailey when it comes to yoga photos – humour me on instagram 🙂

Stoke Park Country Club and Spa – my second/first home and where you will find me as Membership Manager to the Health and Tennis Club and where I teach Rocket (Vinyasa Flow) Tuesdays 7am and kids yoga on a Sunday at 4pm.

Ride! Cobham – Owned by my dear friend Lisa, I have been going there for years and now with the introduction of Yoga to the studio I teach there, Wednesday’s Rocket 11am.

Beaverbrook Hotel and Country Club, I teach members Vinyasa flow Wednesday’s at 815 am and 930am.
